Steve Pool, a beloved former Seattle weather anchor and journalist, died after battling Alzheimer‘s disease on Friday, November 22, 2023. He was 70 years old. His wife announced the tragic news in a post on his social media handle, which said,
“I am here to share the sad news that my dear husband, my love, has passed away from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He fought this terrible disease privately for several years and with every ounce of his being.”
Steve Pool was born on November 5, 1953. He graduated from Tyee High School in Washington. He attended the University of Washington and started his career at KOMO as an intern while studying. He was hired full-time in 1978 after graduating. He began as a writer and was also featured as a reporter, sports reporter, and program producer. He later became a weather anchor for the station and held the position from 1984 to 2019. He was the first African-American to become a weather forecaster in the country.
Steve Pool has earned many accolades and awards for his dedication and hard work, including seven Emmy awards and a Sigma Delta Chi Society of Professional Journalism award. He also earned gold and bronze medals from the New York International Film Festival, a National Academy of Television Arts and Science American Scene Award., two ‘Telly’ Awards, and an Academy of Religious Broadcasting Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also a part of the team that won the Edward R. Murrow Award for the best newscast in America.
He was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He passed away on November 22, 2023, after fighting with the disease for several years. His death was announced two days later by his beloved wife, Michelle Lee Pool, who paid homage to her late husband, saying, “We are so blessed to have had him in our lives,” she continues, “He was an extraordinary man, husband, father, and good friend to many. Please know that he truly loved his job and this community and felt so privileged to be a part of your lives.”
