Friends and close family members are not supposed to profit off of a political candidate’s campaign for office. But in a surprising turn of events, Melania Trump earned compensation in the six figures, from her husband Donald's third run for President.
The former fashion model, who was born in Yugoslavia in 1970, has been married to Donald Trump since 2005. While she ended up becoming First Lady, Melania reportedly had a completely different mindset before meeting her future husband.
RelatedDonald Trump's history with shirtless photos has left more questions than answers on Quora and Reddit.
According to a former boyfriend, Melania did not envision herself taking up permanent residence in the States. Her encounter with Trump changed the entire trajectory of her life. She was not a popular First Lady with large swathes of the country, either, as evidenced by her notable absence from the cover of Vogue throughout her tenure.
Despite the stringent rules that govern campaign funding in the United States, Melania Trump benefited to the tune of $155,000 from a Super PAC affiliated with her husband Donald.
Super PACs, usually referred to officially as "independent expenditure only political committees," are groups that can collect unlimited money from anyone, including people, companies, and unions. They use this money to support political activities on their own.
The particular group in question is known as Make America Great Again, the same mantra that Trump used to drive his successful quest for the highest office in the land in 2016. The news was first made public by The New York Times, in a report that claimed that the payments to Melania had been made in December 2021.
The NYT bombshell was published in July 2023, about one and a half years later. Reportedly, Make America Great Again did not disclose the payments—listed in two transactions, of $125,000 and $30,000—in their initial federal reports.
RelatedDuring their first interview as newlyweds on Larry King Live, Donald and Melania Trump looked very relaxed together.
After more than a dozen months, however, the transactions became public knowledge. This was triggered when Trump filed new disclosure forms in 2023. In the documents, the payments were described as having been for a “speaking engagement.” The timing of the transfer, aligning with the date of a fundraiser for his campaign, was also deemed suspicious.
The reports about a Trump-affiliated Super PAC making out a payment to Melania Trump emerged midway through 2023. This was a little over half a year since Donald had officially announced that he would be seeking a re-run of the 2020 showdown between him and Joe Biden for the presidency.
Unsurprisingly, there was an expectation in some quarters for Melania to be in some type of legal trouble. That did not turn out to be the case, however.
By the mid-way point of 2024, there were no follow-up stories about any kind of consequences, suggesting that her claims of being paid for a speaking engagement had been considered legitimate by the powers that be.

The same cannot be said of Donald Trump, however, who has been embroiled in seemingly endless court battles. The most standout case was brought against him by the Manhattan DA's Office, for paying hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The settlement was meant to keep her silent about an alleged affair with Trump, which happened in 2006.
Donald Trump split a lot of his time between his campaign for President and making court appearances for the hush money trial. One notable absentee throughout all these court visits was Melania Trump. It was not lost on the public as well as the press, with questions looming over the potential reasons for her no-show.
Melania not showing up for her husband’s court dates did not help whispers of a potential fallout between the former first couple. Rumors of a possible divorce have always frequented social media, with some even going as far as trying to estimate how much she would make in the event of one.
Donald has always been famous for enforcing prenup agreements with the women he ended up marrying, although Melania proved her smarts while he was President, and seeking re-election for a second term. Knowing she held leverage during the campaign period, she used the election as an opportunity to renegotiate her prenup.
RelatedMelania Trump has been asked about Stormy Daniels in the past, and her reaction says it all.
With the 2024 election looming, Melania repeated the trick in 2023. This time, the changes she demanded to the prenup were for the sake of her son Barron.
Melania Trump appears to have escaped any kind of negative impact following the payments by the group Make America Great Again. Sadly for her, though, that is not where her links to financial payouts made by Trump-affiliated Super PACs end.
In 2024, a report published on Raw Story claimed that one of the First Lady’s stylists had been receiving a monthly stipend of $18,000 from the Save America PAC. The money was described as having been for “strategy consulting,” and was paid out to French-American fashion and costume designer Hervé Pierre Braillard.
Unlike the case with Make America Great Again, Save America declared the payments while making their SEC filings. According to the report, the total amount of money paid out to the designer was $108,000, which would translate to six months of work.
Stories like these elicited strong reactions from the public, with one person on Reddit posing the question: “Does anyone else ever feel like a complete chump for doing honest work?” A very emotional user responded: “This hits hard for me, recently.”
“I've been struggling with thoughts like this,” the user went on to say. “F*** me for being a good person and doing what I think is right while others are out there breaking laws, avoiding taxes and living like kings while honest people are living in squalor just trying to survive.”
