Cyrus:
We first connected in 1991 at the play’s reading, Alibaba aur 40 Chor. When it was Kunal’s turn, he hiccuped every other word. The majority of the writing was difficult for him to understand because he used to smoke a lot. I’ve never heard somebody read that poorly. Because it was a pantomime, he was advised to disregard the lines and instead just express himself (laughs).
Kunal:
I had only recently begun acting at the time. I was acting in this manner because I believed that I would one day become Marlon Brando.
Cyrus:
At the time, Kunal was very stern, but today he is smiling more. Instead of always smiling, it almost seems like he has a frown on his face. I get along well with strangers. He was the lone guy who was somewhat guarded and aloof, but not in a negative way.
Kunal:
He was quite loud and animated. In all honesty, I liked being with him. He was quite energized while working when we first met. We were united by a number of routines. We eventually had fun, despite the fact that he claims I was quiet and uncoordinated during the play. I relished the opportunity and relished working on the play with children.
Cyrus:
We are really different, Kunal and I. He has full access to every aspect of my existence. He is fully aware of who I am and what my dramebaazi is. He is chupa rustom, and no one is familiar with him. There are sometimes bite and scratch marks on his body from when we play together. We used to learn about the girl in his life in this manner.
Kunal:
It’s an awful tale. He used to ask me to end the relationship for him. He was such a coward when it came to breaking up, so I went and did it on his behalf. He would occasionally hide behind me when a furious girl yelled at me (laughter).
Cyrus:
One episode from the 1990s comes to mind. The city had only recently adopted nakabandi. Kunal was with me, and I had a drink. He provided a ride. You know what he did after taking the wheel? He strikes the barriers with a direct blow. Boom! And we wind up behind bars. Because we crashed through the barricades, we were sent to jail three times. Ninety percent of our interesting tales include drinking.
Kunal:
From theater to documentaries, radio to podcasts, social media lives to everything in between, we’ve done it all. For more than 30 years, we have collaborated on projects. And without a little understanding and accommodation, this wouldn’t have been feasible. The only real drawback is a slight lack of excitement. You get excited when you interact and collaborate with new people. But I’ve been working with Cyrus for years. But when we work together on a new project, we continue to feel delighted.
